Hormones are the most powerful molecules in our bodies. They influence how we feel, how we think, how we digest, how we look and how we grow. Modern pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, and other toxins are interfering with our sex hormone system and putting us at risk for chronic disease. Endocrine (hormone) issues are not just something for menopausal women to be concerned about. In fact endocrine problems, esp. sex hormone problems, are having profound effects on our health and our genetics.
Due to diabetes and excess body fat, we are now living in a world where elderly men have four times as much estrogen in their bodies as elderly women. The fact that 10% of couples are infertile and unable to conceive naturally should get our attention. And we should be concerned that fewer male babies are being born due to increasing exposure of toxic, estrogen-like chemicals. But that just scratches the surface of what sex-hormone problems are doing in our bodies. Sex hormones estrogen and testosterone also have a great influence on our brain chemistry by altering the function of the genes COMT and MAO.
As methylation research has shown, people with COMT, MAO, and MTHFR SNPs are slower at breaking down stress-related chemicals dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine (called catecholamines). These individuals often suffer from chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, anxiety, panic, insomina and weight gain. The problem is that people with COMT and MAO SNPs are predisposed to having higher levels of stress chemicals in their bodies. And being estrogen toxic makes this problem even worse!
Excess estrogen slows down the COMT and MAO pathways making individuals even more prone to stress-related illness. If someone is born with COMT and MAO SNPs then they already have a greater-than-average risk of being overwhelmed by the effects of stress. When you throw in excess estrogen from birth control, pesticides, herbicides, dairy products, etc. then you make the problem EVEN WORSE! These fake, dangerous estrogens slow down our body’s ability to remove stress hormones. This is why balancing sex hormones by detoxifying estrogen and raising progesterone (in both men and women) can have such a calming influence on the brain. And when your brain chemistry is balanced, you are balanced!
In our quest for health we often forget to look at the endocrine system as a source of our body’s dysfunction. It is a complicated system that can have a powerful influence not just on our health, but also on our brain and our genes!
